Welcome to our Library– Paraburdoo, Western Australia.

The Golden Feather Hunt is one of the most popular highlights of Scribblers Festival. Each year, libraries from all across Western Australia invite thousands of excited kids to search bookshelves high and low for treasured, feather bookmarks. In 2019, Paraburdoo library won the award for Best Library Display. They went above and beyond to decorate their children’s section with enormous posters, feathers and displays. Although over 1,500kms from Perth, the local community was closely connected to Scribblers Festival thanks to the wonderful librarians in their midst.

We asked Kylie Pettit from Paraburdoo Library to share some of her insights as a librarian and tell us a little more about her love of books. After all, librarians are the experts when it comes to choosing the best stories to captivate readers and encourage literacy.

What book captured your imagination as a child?

Anything by Enid Blyton, but especially her St Clare books.  I loved imagining going away to a boarding school and having adventures!

What makes your library such a special place?

Our library is such an inviting space. Being a small community it really is the heart of the town.

Which book in your library is always checked out?

At the moment it’s hard to keep anything by Aaron Blabey and Anh Do on the shelf!

Do you have a book to recommend to a ten-year old hooked on computer games?

For a ten year old hooked on computer games I would definitely recommend any of our Junior Non Fiction coding books – specifically Create with Code by Jurie Horneman.

What are you currently reading? Can you give us a quick review?

I am currently reading The Library of Lost and Found by Phaedra Patrick.  It’s something a little bit different to what I would normally read. It’s a little bit quirky, but I love the main character's personality and the fact that she also works in a library is a plus!

Outside of the library, where is your favourite place to read?

I love to read in bed before going to sleep. It’s the best way to end my day.

Which fairy tale do you most identify with? Villain or Hero?

I can definitely identify with Beauty from Beauty and the Beast – I mean who wouldn’t want that personal library!

Which imaginary/fantasy book world would you most like to visit?

I would like to visit Medora from the Medoran Chronicles by Lynette Noni. It would be great to have a special power!

If you could have along lunch with any author (living or dead), who would you choose?

This is a hard one!  I would love to have lunch with Maria V Snyder, or Lynette Noni. I love their writing styles and would love to pick their brains on how they come up with their ideas for their books.

Which story-time book gets the most giggles at your library?

It would have to be either What Do They Do with All the Poo from All the Animals at the Zoo? by Anh Do, or Dinosaur Dump by Tim Miller.

If you would like your library to join the 2020 Golden Feather Hunt, don’t delay! There are fantastic prizes to be won and most importantly it is a wonderful way to add sparkle to your library bookshelves. To learn more and register online visit our Golden Feather Hunt page.
